Turk Island, located in Lawrence Cove, Bere Island, Co Cork. Local folklore recounts how in pre-famine times a Turkish ship anchored in Berehaven with a plague flag flying from it’s mast. It is thought that some of the ill sailors tried to land on Bere Island but were prevented from doing so. Most of the crew eventually recovered, they were permitted to bury their dead on a small island in Lawrence Cove which became known as Turk Island. The graves are marked by stone markers. Access is not possible to Turk Island, however, it can be viewed from a kayak or boat.
