Mother's notes to Noel in Mattie's

The note reads:

1 Bottle of Cream Soda

A quarter of Assorted Mushrooms

A quarter of Pineapple chunks

3 Penny dogs

The vast array of sweets that the shop stocked were on display in row after row of glass jars. The sweets were weighed out in 2ozs, 4ozs, etc all the way up to a Lb ie, a pound of sweets. Most people would order a quarter of a lb or a variety of mixed sweets. Cadburys sold loose sweets by the box to sweetshops which could then be sold loose in weighed bags.
