My mother’s youngest sister, Helen, with Patty Carter and friend out dancing in a ballroom in Parnell St. They were approx fifteen years old. The Kingsway Ballroom was was situated off of Parnell St on Granby Lane. It was said to have the best dance floor in Dublin. The maple sprung floor was of the Kingsway meant that it had great bounce. Before it the Kingsway it was the Embassy and prior to that it was called the Balalaika Ballroom. People in our community loved to dance and going to dances was very popular. My mother and all of her sisters could do all of the popular dances of the day, jive and waltzes.
