Bill Fleming - RIP

Mary Cummings Family Archive

Bill Fleming, pictured here aged eight years of age in his family home. Bill was a great little swimmer having learnt to swim in Spenser Dock Canal or the Liffey. A lot of the children in the area learnt to swim in the company of their peers with these ad hoc classes.

More often than not though we all attended formal lessons from the area in Tara Street Baths.

On the day that Bill died, he decided to go fishing off of Spencer Dock. The fishing hook caught in his jumper and as he stood to free himself, he lost his balance and fell in. He hit his head off the dock wall and was unconscious entering the water. Bill is one of the many children who lost their lives in the highly industrialised port, that was our home.
