Seatown Castle

Around the corner of my house is the 13th century Seatown Castle, which is actually the tower of a Franciscan abbey founded around 1240 by John Verdon.

In 1282 the monastery was held by the Irish order of monks, who provided to sailors in from the nearby port. The monastery was was ransacked by the Scots in 1315, actually the same Scots that Edward the Bruce brought over when invading Ireland that year and crowning himself High King of Ireland, a few streets to the east of the “castle”. The monastery was destroyed some time in the early 17th century.
