Knockelly Castle, Fethard, Co Tipperary
What are people’s favourite 5k walks? Mine is to walk by Knockelly Castle. A nice hilly walk that gives a good workout.
There’s a love story associated with Knockelly Castle. Back in the late 1600’s, a British soldier, Robert Jolley and an orphan girl, Ellen Meagher fell in love. It wasn’t meant to be as Robert was sent off to foreign parts. The heartbroken Ellen went to London as a ladies companion. There, she took the eye of an extremely wealthy gentleman who offered her his hand in marriage and all his worldly goods if she gave him an heir. She became a very wealthy, young widow not long afterwards. One day, she came across the now Captain Jolley. They renewed their friendship, married and returned to live out their lives in Knockelly Castle.
Knockelly Castle from the 16th Century and is in fairly decent condition for its age. It was built by Edmund Fits James Butler 8th Baron Dunboyne of Kiltinan Castle as a home for his second son, Peter.
