Carrowkeel is an ancient site, and one of the most important Neolithic-era sites in Ireland, dating back to 3,500-2,900 BC.
14 cairns perch atop the Bricklieve Mountains, with another 12 in the vicinity (many of which you can see from the top of Carrowkeel.) It is my favourite place in Ireland – and I’m lucky enough to not only have it on my doorstep but also to be able to see Carrowkeel from my sitting room window!
This is my happy place – I loved Carrowkeel even before we bought our wee stone cottage, but I love it even more now that it’s home. Cairns G, H, and K are the most popular to visit, but Cairn B is my favourite, followed by Cairn E. Next on our list is to locate Cairns C, D and O! Climb to the top of the hill through the bog and heather to find these ancient sacred places, and crawl inside them just like our ancestors before us – unchanged for thousands of years.
