Schools' Folklore Project

Welcome!
Why not get your school involved in the collection of folklore and share the history of your locality online?
In 1937 the Irish Folklore Commission initiated a unique scheme to preserve a vulnerable part of Ireland’s rich heritage. National Schools from around the country were enlisted to collect and record folklore from the older generations in their area. The resulting folklore collection, known as the Schools’ Manuscript Collection 1937 - 1938 is available in most county libraries around Ireland. Original manuscripts are archived in the National Folklore Collection.
The objective of this cross-curricular project is to recreate the 1937 scheme and is aimed at Upper Primary.
Participants can expect to:
Research the original manuscripts for their school or locality; often making connections with their ancestors
Interview older relatives or neighbours on the original topics laid out in the 1937 Scheme or, devise new topics relevant to their area
Record this information and upload it to your own section on this website to share with others
Teachers can use the Classroom Resource provided below to start the Schools’ Folklore Project and get students involved in the preservation of their own local history.
