Samhain 2014: shadows, sounds & stories.

People over 50 years were invited to join creative workshops inspired by the ancient festival of Samhain. A series of workshops took place in September and October 2014 with three groups of older people: one each based in Dublin, Mayo and Belfast. The participants collaborated with professional musicians, creative writers and a photographer in response to their reflections on the Celtic festival of Samhain.
Using the collections of the National Museum of Ireland and the Ulster Museum for inspiration each group focused on different art forms:
• Music and soundtrack creation led by Elaine Agnew at the National Museum of Ireland – Archaeology, Kildare Street, Dublin.
• Poetry, creative writing and story-telling led by Terry McDonagh at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar, Co. Mayo.
• Photography with Belfast Exposed at the National Museums, Northern Ireland – Ulster Museum, Botanic Gardens, Belfast.
Samhain is a collaborative venture between the National Museum of Ireland, Age & Opportunity and Poetry Ireland. The initiative is funded in 2014 by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht; the National Museum of Ireland; Age & Opportunity; Poetry Ireland and Mayo Co. Co. Arts Office and supported by the Ulster Museum and Music Network.
