Pride of Place-Growing up in Sheriff St

Introduction.

My name is Maria McGrane and I would like to welcome you to my photography exhibition called “Pride of Place-Growing up in Sheriff Street”. Dublin Port is one of the oldest and most historic parts of Dublin. It did not originate between the Great North and South Walls, as they were called. Dublin Port originated much further up the river at Wood Quay where the Vikings settled. Sheriff St did not exist until the mid 1800’s when it was built on reclaimed land from the sea. Three generations of my family have lived in Dublin Port and Docks, originating with two brothers from Cahirciveen in Co. Kerry. Tom, my great grandfather and his brother, my great uncle John O’Shea, both carpenters, left Kerry to make a new and better life for themselves, in the thriving Docklands of Dublin. Not many people know the fascinating story of Dublin Port, its rich history, its people, their stories, traumas, triumphs and grief. They don’t know the emotionally connected, supportive, colourful, kind and empathic people who lived there. But myself, my family, friends, neighbours and customers of my father’s shop do. We have come together in this collaboration to tell our stories.
