The Tara Brooch

By Siobhán O'Keeffe, 2nd year

Object No. 29 'Tara' brooch, eighth century
National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology

The Tara Brooch

Crafted by an ancient goldsmith

Lost in the sea

Lost but not forgotten

Found Upon the seashore

In Bettystown County Meath

By two young boys

No longer lost

Sold onto a watchmaker

For eighteen pence

He cleaned it up

And sold it on again

At Waterhouse it was exhibited

This glorious jewel

They named it the Royal Tara Brooch

And sold it again

The Royal Irish Academy

Is its new home

This beautiful jewel

The Tara Brooch

No description can do it justice

It must be seen

To be appreciated

The Tara Brooch
