The empty cooking pot

By Catherine Flanagan, Primary

Object No. 81 Empty cooking pot, nineteenth century
National Museum of Ireland - Country Life

the empty cooking pot is now full

as black as the pot may be

the food it makes is tasty

for sure the divine smells

that come from its contents

would surely call you to the kitchen door

it’s hard to imagine the hardship

the irish people endured

when the blight came and ruined the spud

oh how wholesome and grand they were

but now the sound spuds would but bud

Ireland and her nation got through

the famine years thank god

the spud is back again

we also have other good food now

so lets fill the empty cooking pot a

nd make divine smells that will

call them from the mountain glens
