The Book Of Kells

By Keelan Hegarty, 1st year.

Object no. 28 Book of Kells, c.800
Old Library, Trinity College Dublin

Irelands finest national treasure

In Trinity College it’s a source of great pleasure

An illuminated manuscript written in Latin

Some of its pages shine like gold satin

Thought to be created about 800 AD

It certainly was a long time before me

The manuscripts date and place of production

Have been the subject of considerable discussion

A masterwork of calligraphy

A book one day I hope to see

Its illustrations and ornamentation

Make it one of the things that represents our nation

Its text is known as insular style

Its sheer beauty would make you smile

Its name is taken from the Abbey of Kells

A book about Jesus, many stories it tells

Over the years its received several additions to its text

I wonder will anything be added next
