Hidden Treasure

By Gerard Hodkinson, 2nd year.

Object No. 30 Ardagh chalice, eighth century
National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology.

Jim and Paddy were digging in the field,

Looking for potatoes, for their next meal.

Their shovel hit something shiny and bright

A treasure from the past that would set their eyes alight.

“Mom, Dad look what we found, a silver chalice lying in the ground”.

A piece of art created in the past

By ancient craftsmen who knew it would last.

This beautiful chalice made of silver and gold,

Was found to be over 1000 years old.

It was cleaned and polished to look like new

And soon all of Ireland would come to view.

The Ardagh Chalice can now be measured

As one of Ireland’s greatest treasures.

An example of art, created by men

Who’ve long since gone but their memories remain.
