In 1972, I was invited to join a school band to play Irish folk tunes on my tenor banjo.
Soon after I could handle my first reels (on the traces of Barney McKenna from the Dubliners) the super group Planxty appeared and we made an effort to digest that. But then in 1975 along came the Bothy Band and changed the style for the next few years into acoustic “Folk ‘n’ Roll”.
By that time I had switched over mainly to the fiddle, and since Tommy Peoples had left the Bothy Band after their first CD, I had to keep on learning from Kevin Burke – until the present day. A few years ago I made the effort to write down the Bothy Band instrumental repertoire and put my own chords to the tunes – see more here
The photos are from a Bothy Band concert in my hometown Kiel, 1975.
