Nature Table
By Patricia Youell
My memory
As a child in England I remember that, when May came and the wild flowers started to bloom in profusion, at school we would begin a ‘Nature Table’. This was a special table covered with white paper and as we ‘found’ broken bird’s eggs and wild flowers, birds’ nests and dead insects, we would bring them into school and place them on this table. The teacher would then label the items with the plants name (common name) not Latin. This to me was the most special thing we did in the whole school year. There were always fresh flowers on display and we children would always be curious at the new additions.
