May Day Procession

About this custom

I’m 46 and I never remember a May day without bonfires and flowers on the doorstep. As a child we always had a May altar in the house and said the rosary every evening at 6pm. I keep the tradition of flowers on the door step and encourage my adult daughter to do the same. I think it’s very important to keep out old traditions alive and our old saying they are part of being Irish and with Europe becoming more diverse it’s important to keep our irish identity.

When does this take place?

Every year

Where does this take place?

This is in Drogheda but I’m from Arklow. I keep the Arklow tradition of flowers on the doorstep alive up here every year. In Arklow they have bonfires around the town and flowers on the doorstep.
