The Old Little Pot

Glenn Nicoll, Rang 5

Object No. 81 Empty cooking pot, nineteenth century
National Museum of Ireland - Country Life

The old pot is black,

It has some nicks and cracks.

Made of strong cast and iron,

It was your grandmother’s secret weapon.

On the open hearth,

It took its pride of place.

The fire was planned early,

To ensure the days cooking a success.

Early in the morning,

The bread was carefully made,

And put upon the pot,

To ensure substance for the day.

With the men working in the field,

The potatoes were put to boil,

From the old cast iron pot.

Just before bed, the fire is fixed again,

The pot is ready for its duties the next day.
