May Altar

Flowers made for the exhibition in the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life

My memory

When I was a child we used to have a May altar in the house. I used to gather flowers for it. I had a statue of Mary and a cloth on the table. It looked very nice. I would walk down the garden to gather the flowers from a wild patch. They would be spring flowers such as primroses and daffodils, bluebells and snowdrops. I would put them in a vase on the table and change the water every day. I enjoyed having the May altar in the house.

When did this happen?

It happened when I was a child in the eighties.

Where did this happen?

In my house in Sligo
